Tape Into The Week

Soft jobs bought last week’s melt-up. Cool CPI and a flat PPI kept it alive. Friday’s retail print tried to take it back, and the index barely blinked.

Census put July sales at $763.6 billion, down 0.6% against a +0.1% call. Ex-autos printed -0.3%. The control group used in GDP math fell 0.4%. Year-over-year growth cooled from 6.8% to 5.0%. That is the first monthly drop since October 2025.

Michigan piled on. Preliminary August sentiment slid to 51.0 from 55.2, well under the 54.5 estimate. One-year inflation expectations ticked to 4.3% from 4.2%. The five-year box held 3.3%.

And the S&P still closed the week with a third straight gain.

$SPY finished 776.34, off 0.20% on Friday and up 0.48% over five sessions. Fourteen-day RSI sits near 66. Strong. Not blow-off. Close enough to Thursday’s 779.37 high that a hot retail print this week can punish lazy longs.

Cross-asset marks into Monday:

• Growth: 731.07 (+1.20% on the week); $SMH 587.82 (+0.31%)

• Breadth: 305.09 tagged a fresh year high; $MDY 716.91 sat on its 717.35 high

• Rates: 82.04 printed a year low; official 10-year 4.68%, 2-year 4.17%, 30-year 5.25%

• Stuff: 401.48 (+0.95% on the week); $USO 126.60 (+3.69%) as oil took the Iran bid

• Credit: 79.71, no stress signal

Policy rate stays 3.50% to 3.75%. Three regional presidents dissented for a hike at the July 28-29 meeting. Traders have been fading extra 2026 tightening after the inflation stack and the retail miss. Front-end yields heard that. The long bond did not. Thursday’s $25 billion 30-year stopped at 5.216%, the richest long-bond stop in a quarter century.

Net setup: records, thinner weekly gains, and a consumer the tape has not priced as broken. Last week the print was CPI. This week the prints wear aprons.

What Last Week Already Priced

Honestly, the easy money off payrolls and CPI is done. Into Monday you are paying up for:

1. No September hike. Soft jobs, on-consensus CPI (headline 3.4%, core 2.5%), and the retail miss already sit in the front end.

2. AI durability with $NVDA at 225.16 and $SMH still above the 200-day, even after $AMAT sold off about 6% on a record $9.12B quarter and $CSCO sat 8% to 9% lower after a record print the tape treated as a margin miss.

3. Breadth that is now the crowded part. Russell and mid-caps at highs. Healthy until it becomes the last trade.

4. A fading oil-war discount while Hormuz can reprice energy and risk premia in a single session.

5. Index mechanics. $RDDT closed 177.97, up 12.6% Friday, after the S&P add. Passive flow does not wait for the Google-search debate.

$WDAY ripped then faded after Silver Lake talks. That is a software bid the AI-eats-SaaS crowd has not had to respect in months. Treat rumor as rumor. The tape treated it as real enough.

The 30-year Treasury yield finished at 5.27%, a level last seen in 2007. Bitcoin hangs near $63,400, glued to its 50-day average after failing the June highs. Last week's hero was cloud computing: $AMZN posted its fastest cloud growth in over four years, and $MSFT's Azure grew 43%. A hawkish Fed hold and a rough stretch for memory names pulled the other way.

The Fed left, but the bill is still on the table

Wednesday’s Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting ended quietly enough, with rates held at 3.50 to 3.75%. The vote was 9 to 3, and all three dissenters wanted a hike. • Monday, August 3 opens with the Institute for Supply Management (ISM) manufacturing PMI at 2:00pm, expected at 54 versus 53.3 prior. A print at or above 54 feeds the cyclical recovery story and helps industrials. A miss under 53.5 revives soft landing doubts. Keep an eye on the prices paid component, seen cooling to 70 from 73; with inflation the whole argument lately, that number may matter more than the headline. The Fed’s loan officer survey lands the same afternoon, a quiet read on whether banks are tightening credit.

• Tuesday’s main event is the Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey (JOLTS) at 2:00pm. Sticky labor costs are exactly what the three dissenters were worried about. Freddie Mac’s 30-year mortgage rate print, last at 6.66%, spells out what all of this means for housing.

• Friday at 12:30pm is the main event. The July jobs report is expected to show 91K in new payrolls after June’s weak 57K, with unemployment ticking up to 4.3% and hourly earnings up 0.3% on the month, 3.5% on the year. Private payrolls are the cleaner tell, expected at 69K versus 49K. A soft print under 80K with rising unemployment would cool September hike bets and give bonds and growth names some air. A hot one above 110K, or sticky wages, hands the dissenters their evidence and puts 5.30% on the 30-year in play. Watch the revisions too; they have been doing quiet damage all summer. Later that morning, the University of Michigan’s inflation expectations read (seen at 3.8%, up from 3.7%) gets a vote. The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) positioning report lands after the close: funds were recently net short S&P 500 futures by about 17K contracts and net long crude by about 120K.

Earnings: AI gets its report card

The slate is heavy, and the AI position takes most of the exam. Last week set the bar: $AMZN ripped 15.3% in its best single day in over a decade and sits within 3% of a record, while $MSFT added about $450 billion in market value. $META got punished for its AI spend before a Friday bounce, and $AAPL sold off on supply constraints even with free cash flow topping what $MSFT, $META, $GOOGL, and $AMZN generate combined (a $2.2 billion tariff refund did not save it).

• , Monday after the close: consensus sits at EPS of $0.35 on revenue of $1.81 billion, up 119% and 81% from a year ago. The valuation is rich, so guidance on free cash flow and government AI demand decides whether the run extends or hands back gains.

• , Monday: expected to post a loss of $0.12 a share on $1.54 billion in revenue. Ad spending reads here set the tone for $APP later in the week.

• , Tuesday after the close: EPS of $1.61 on $11.31 billion in revenue, a 47% jump from last year. Bookings tied to the Helios and MI450 ramps, especially from and OpenAI, are the whole story for the chip complex after last week’s memory selloff.

• Wednesday is memory day. $SNDK is expected at EPS of $34.67 on $8.42 billion in revenue, after beating EPS estimates by 60% last quarter. $WDC goes the same day at $3.30 on $3.69 billion. With CXMT newly public and Seoul trying to put a floor under memory prices, guidance on pricing and inventories decides whether last week’s drubbing was a warning or a gift.

• Also Wednesday: $LLY at EPS of $6.06 on $20.69 billion in revenue (it beat by more than 20% last quarter), $UBER at $0.83 on $14.24 billion, and $APP at $3.76 on $1.94 billion, up 54% from a year ago.

• Thursday: $COP at EPS of $2.90 on $18.79 billion in revenue, a big sequential step up that tells you what war-era crude did for producers. $DDOG goes at $0.58 on $1.08 billion, up 30%. $COHR is also on deck after guiding next quarter revenue to $1.91 to $2.05 billion; it has been swinging violently with the hardware trade.

• Friday thins out, with $PPL, $FLR, and $UAA among the stragglers.

On the new issue side, Braveheart Bio’s roughly $367 million offering Thursday headlines a small biotech-heavy IPO slate. One more drag worth knowing about: insider selling picked up after lockup expirations, with notable sales at $ABNB, $SCHW, $MU, $GM, $KO, and $V. Until fresh buying shows up, that caps enthusiasm at the margins.

This is the densest catalyst week of the quarter. Four of the Magnificent 7 report. The Fed decides Wednesday under Chair Kevin Warsh with oil still near multi-month highs. June PCE lands Friday. Last week the tape cracked again. The Nasdaq closed near 24,976 on Friday, right on the 25,000 shelf it has been defending since June, and finished below its 50-day for another week in a stretch that has now gone four of five. Alphabet’s capex bump and Tesla’s profit miss already told you what the market punishes right now. Spending without proof of return.

I am treating this week as one probability tree with three branches. My weights: 25% bull, 45% base, 30% bear. Assigning weekly S&P returns of +2.5%, 0%, and -3.5% to those branches gives an expected value of -0.43% for the week. Negative EV on the index. That is not a short signal; it is a sizing signal. I am not adding index longs before Wednesday at 2:30 PM ET, and anything I do add gets half size until Warsh finishes talking.

The data stack is stacked. Monday opens with Durable Goods Orders MoM, forecast +1.6% after a -4.5% prior. Tuesday brings Conference Board Consumer Confidence off a 91.2 prior. Wednesday is the FOMC hold call and the presser. Thursday packs Personal Income (0.3% forecast vs 0.7% prior), Core PCE MoM (0.1% vs 0.3%), Personal Spending (0.4% vs 0.7%), and Q2 GDP Growth Rate (2.3% forecast vs 2.1% prior). Claims already printed hot at 187k last week. Labor is not rolling over. Oil is not calming down. That mix is why the bear branch stays fat.

Geopolitics: Hormuz Sets the Discount Rate

Oil is the macro story, and it is not close. Brent tagged above $100 earlier last week, then pulled back into the high $90s on Friday after a roughly 38% surge for the month. On Thursday it settled near $94 after tagging the mid-$96s when Houthis claimed hits on Saudi tankers Encelia and Layla in the Red Sea. WTI futures pushed through $90 in the overnight complex. Inventory builds did not matter. Chokepoint risk did.

The physical map got uglier. Hormuz traffic has been a trickle for stretches of July. Iran’s IRGC warned the southern route is mined and that tankers need Iranian coordination. The US ran a long streak of night strikes into Iran. Houthis pulled Bab el-Mandeb into the same premium as Hormuz by hitting Saudi hulls and talking blockade. One disrupted gulf is a problem. Two at once rewrites the freight and inflation math. Pakistan, backed by China, is still trying to restart stalled US and Iran talks. That is the only clean de-escalation channel on my board, and it is thin.

Forward looking, I frame oil as three states. De-escalation via the China-backed channel, roughly 30%: Brent works back toward the low-to-mid $80s and equities get a multiple tailwind worth more than any single earnings beat. Grind, roughly 45%: strikes continue, the strait stays constrained, Brent chops $92 to $102 and every rally in duration-sensitive tech gets sold into. Escalation, roughly 25%: Trump follows through on a larger attack path, Brent breaks $105, and the September hike stops being a probability and starts being the base case. Note the asymmetry. The bear branch in oil feeds the bear branch in rates. These are not independent events, which is why my equity bear weight is 30% and not 20%.

The Fed: Warsh Holds, September Is the Trade

Wednesday is a hold. The funds target sits at 3.50% to 3.75%. Futures still put roughly a one-third chance on a hike this week and much higher odds that the target is higher after September 16. That gap is the whole game. Warsh does not need to move rates to move markets. He needs one sentence about energy pass-through. If the presser keeps September “live” without locking the committee in, that is my base case and the market digests it. If he pre-commits to September, front-end yields jump and the Nasdaq loses 25,000 the same afternoon.

The data can override him. Thursday’s advance GDP and Friday’s June core PCE decide whether the September number holds. May core PCE already ran 3.4% year over year, the hottest since late 2023, after a 0.3% monthly print. Consensus wants June core MoM near 0.1%. A soft monthly number buys the doves a month. Anything at 0.3% with Brent near $100 and claims this tight closes the debate. The 10-year already backed up near 4.71% on the oil spike. That is the wrong kind of yield backup for equities: supply-shock inflation risk, not a clean boom in real growth.

The Earnings Gauntlet: Capex on Trial

$MSFT and $META report Wednesday after the close. $AAPL reports Thursday. $AMZN reports Friday. Consensus sits near $4.24 EPS and $82.9B revenue for Microsoft, $8.89 and $60.2B for Meta, $1.89 and $108.9B for Apple, and $2.26 and $196.8B for Amazon. The market already told you the grading rubric. Alphabet raised full-year capex to $195B to $205B, printed Cloud up about 82% to roughly $24.8B, and still sold off about 5%. Tesla beat revenue and still got hit because operating income collapsed versus the bar. Moody’s put out a note saying AI spend threatens the credit quality of $AMZN, $META, and Alphabet. So the burden of proof sits on returns, not ambition.

$MSFT is down about 25% over twelve months while Azure still grows near 40%. That is a stock where expectations already reset. $AMZN has telegraphed a massive 2026 capex year, so the AWS growth number and retail margin have to carry the print. $META has already shown it will spend through the cycle on infrastructure and custom silicon. $AAPL gets graded on Services durability, China, and whether the AI hardware story is more than slideware. My read: the bar is lower on the names that already sold off and higher on the names that have not. Position accordingly, not emotionally.

This week has two clocks running at once. The first expires whenever President Trump decides his ultimatum to Tehran is up. He said the US will strike Iranian infrastructure this week unless diplomacy produces a breakthrough, and Iran’s military command promised to crush “everything that is still intact” in the region if he does. The second clock runs to Wednesday’s close, when $GOOGL and $TSLA report and the market decides whether the AI trade survives its worst scare of the year. I don’t trade headlines. I trade the probabilities behind them, so let’s price both clocks.

What Last Week Told Us

The week handed traders a contradiction. Inflation data came in soft on both CPI and PPI, the kind of print that normally buys the Fed room and buys bulls a rally. Stocks sold off anyway. The reason showed up Friday: China dropped its K3 Kimi model and tech caught the same fear that Deepseek triggered eighteen months ago, that AI capability is getting cheaper faster than US capex can justify itself. $QQQ lost 4.13% on the week and broke a diamond pattern to the downside on volume. $SPY gave back 1.55% and sits about 2% under all-time highs, still inside the range it has held since June.

Under the surface the tape was rotating, not panicking. Banks crushed estimates. Goldman beat EPS by 48.8%, Morgan Stanley by 23.1%, and XLF printed all-time highs while tech bled. Energy caught a bid on the war. $IBM pre-announced 1% revenue growth, called its own quarter disappointing, and produced the worst single-day drop in company history. $NFLX missed, guided down, and closed at 2-year lows. Bitcoin held above $64,000 and posted a second green week, which tells you the selling was an AI repricing, not a liquidity event. Small caps confirmed it: $IWM fell only 1.25% and still sits on channel support.

That distinction matters for how I’m sizing this week. A broad forced unwind punishes everything. A sector repricing pays you for owning what the money rotates into.

The Iran Deadline: Pricing the Three Paths

Brent settled Friday at $88.10, up 4.6% on the day and roughly 14% on the week, after Iran hit a Kuwaiti desalination plant and retaliated against US positions across six countries. The June ceasefire is dead, the naval blockade is back, Hormuz traffic is a trickle, and Iran has reportedly told the Houthis to prepare to shut the Red Sea route if American strikes touch its power grid.

Here is how I’m handicapping the week. Full scenario math, price targets, and the expected value calculation live in the dashboard, so I’ll keep the narrative here.

• De-escalation, roughly 1 in 4. Talks resumed once before and collapsed once before. A deadline this public gives both sides a stage for an eleventh-hour deal, and the June MOU proves the two governments can sign paper when the pain gets high enough. Oil gives back most of the war premium fast. Energy longs get hit, tech catches a relief bid.

• Grind, roughly 1 in 2. Strikes continue, the deadline slips the way the March deadline slipped by 10 days, and Hormuz stays restricted without a Red Sea shutdown. This is the path of least resistance because it is what has actually happened for five months. Oil holds a high range, energy stays bid, and equities trade earnings instead of war.

• Infrastructure strikes, roughly 1 in 4. Trump follows through, Iran answers on civilian infrastructure and the Red Sea closes. Two of the world’s critical oil arteries restricted at once is a regime most traders have never priced. Crude gaps, VIX doesn’t stop at 19, and correlation goes to one.

The expected value across those paths still leans higher for crude, which is why I’m not selling my $XOM into strength. But note the asymmetry: the tail scenario moves oil three times as far as the friendly one. When the payoff distribution is that skewed, you size smaller and let the fat tail work for you instead of against you. This is the same logic as selling the 10 delta put in reverse. I want to be the one holding the lottery ticket the market is underpricing, not the one writing it.

Wednesday Night Decides the Quarter

and both report Wednesday after the close, with SK Hynix out the same day in its first print since the US listing. follows Thursday night after a 33% month-to-date collapse. This is the K3 Kimi referendum. The bear case Friday was never about one Chinese model. It was about whether hundreds of billions in hyperscaler capex earns a return. Alphabet answers that question directly: cloud growth and the capex line will matter more than EPS. Consensus wants $26.4B in revenue from Tesla, up 17.3% YoY, but the stock trades on robotaxi fleet scaling, not on the quarter.

My read: expectations into $GOOGL got cut 2.2% on Friday for reasons that have nothing to do with its business. Fear-driven de-rating into a strong print is the setup I look for. It doesn’t guarantee anything on one trade, and I never bet like it does, but repeated over many earnings cycles it is positive EV. Core around +0.2% MoM and 2.9% YoY. Energy can gift a soft headline. Core still has to do the real work for hike odds.

Banks open the season Tuesday: $JPM, $WFC, $BAC, $GS, $C. Watch net interest income, trading, credit quality, and any war-premium language in guidance. Wednesday stacks $ASML, $BLK, $JNJ, $MS. Broken Tape

Here is where we stand as of tonight, July 7, 2026. $BTC changed hands near $63,414, up on the session and clawing back from a late June flush near $59,150, yet still roughly 50% under the October 2025 peak near $126,000. Flip the screen and the picture has changed. $SPX futures sit near 7,584, a hair off record territory. $NQ futures fell 0.85% as chip selling out of Asia hit the tape. Samsung beat on every line and still dropped 8.8%, and the Kospi fell hard enough to trigger a trading halt. One asset is trying to carve out a bottom while the other digests a historic run, and that shifting gap is still the entire story.

The 30 day correlation between $BTC and the $SPX remains pinned near 0.22, against north of 0.70 earlier this year. When two assets that normally move in lockstep stay split this long, you are not staring at noise. You are watching capital change seats, and now you are watching some of it start to change back.

That is the claim I want to test. Not with a story, with numbers.

What’s In The Flows

I do not care much for narratives. I care about cash moving. The cleanest read on where institutional cash goes is the US spot $BTC exchange traded funds, and the tape there just showed its first real crack in the bear case.

• The bleed I flagged in early June kept running, stretching into record outflow territory by late June.

• Then the tape flipped. The funds just pulled in $221M in a single day, snapping a 10 session outflow streak with the strongest inflow print in two months.

• The buying came from funds beyond BlackRock’s IBIT, a sign the bid is broadening rather than one desk nibbling.

• Long term holders resumed accumulating alongside the fund inflow, the same cohort that has marked prior lows.

The confidence cracks got worse before they started to heal. Strategy, which broke the seal with a 32 BTC sale in early June, went on to sell 1,363 more coins at quarter end and disclosed an $8.32B quarterly loss on its holdings. The stock rallied 7.9% anyway on its new Digital Credit Capital Framework, which authorizes up to $2B in buybacks and gives the company room to sell coins to fund dividends. The never sell gospel is officially retired. The oversold extremes are unwinding too. RSI has recovered from 18.20 to about 60. The Fear and Greed reading sits at 15, still extreme fear but off the floor of 11. Price sits right at the $63,500 line it was leaning on a month ago, now fighting to flip it back into support, and tomorrow’s Fed minutes are the next real catalyst.

None of that is retail panic. Thirteen-F filings and desk commentary point at allocators and advisors trimming risk in size. This is professional cash stepping back, not a Reddit stampede.

Where Did The Billion Go

Ask the obvious question. When billions left $BTC funds while equities printed records, where did it go? The honest answer was AI and semis. $NVDA, $MSFT, and the chip names tagged new highs while $BTC shed billions. QQQ pressed records. SMH ripped. That trade is now showing its age. Goldman’s prime desk reports hedge funds have sold tech hardware for four straight weeks. A report that $NVDA’s next generation Kyber server rack slipped by more than a year rattled the Asian supply chain, and Samsung’s 19 fold profit surge still earned its shareholders an 8.8% haircut. Cash is rotating inside the rotation, out of semis and toward hyperscalers, with $MSFT up 1.5% while the chip complex bled.

Probabilities vs Story

Here is the thing. A casino does not predict the next hand. It knows the edge plays out over volume. Rotation calls work the same way, so I size the question as probabilities instead of a verdict.

I don’t predict weeks. I price them. Last week brought a jobs number that missed by half, a Dow record built on one index addition, and the best quarter chips have ever posted, followed almost immediately by a hedge fund manager putting a number on the short side. This week hands me four hard catalysts in five days: Fed minutes Wednesday, a forced $4 billion buy program Tuesday, an earnings kickoff Thursday, and a $29 billion IPO Friday. None of that is a forecast. It’s a distribution, and my job is sizing positions against it, not guessing the outcome.

The Fed Walks Into Its Own Minutes

Kevin Warsh chaired his first meeting on June 17 and held the funds rate at 3.50% to 3.75%. Nothing strange there. The dot plot moved the tape: nine of nineteen committee members now expect a hike this year, a full reversal from March. Warsh submitted no projection of his own. He’s said he distrusts forward guidance and wants the committee judged on real time data instead of the models it has leaned on for decades.

Then June’s jobs report landed at 57,000, roughly half the 115,000 forecast, with April and May revised down a combined 74,000. Futures pulled a September hike off the table, but October stayed alive. Core inflation still runs at 2.9% year over year, headline at 4.2%. Warsh told the European Central Bank forum in Sintra that prices are “too high,” even while admitting the committee has never been more open to AI’s deflationary pull.

Wednesday’s minutes tell me which story the committee actually believes.

• Bull case (30%): the minutes lean on the soft jobs print and read softer than the dot plot implied

• Base case (45%): the minutes confirm the hawkish tone everyone already priced in, and the market shrugs

Hormuz Isn’t Closed, It Isn’t Open Either

Trump and Iranian president Masoud Pezeshkian signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on June 17. It set a sixty day window covering nuclear inspections, a $300 billion reconstruction package, sanctions relief, and safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz. Traffic has picked up since the signing but stays well below levels seen before the war. Bloomberg reported crews on several tankers have been stranded in the Gulf for more than a hundred days and still saw no rush of ships moving when the ceasefire news broke.

The sticking point this week is Oman’s proposal to charge service fees for transit, which the US calls unacceptable, layered on an unresolved clause requiring Iran to help define the strait’s future administration. Talks in Doha are stuck on both points. Oil round tripped back to roughly $68 to $70 a barrel on the bet the deal holds. ING’s commodities desk called that pricing too hopeful, arguing the market treats a fragile truce as if it were settled.

• Base case (40%): the fragile status quo holds, and traffic keeps normalizing at its current pace

• Bull case (30%): Doha produces a toll compromise, and the sixty day window closes early

• Bear case (30%): the Lebanon-Israel ceasefire cracks again, or the toll standoff hardens, sending oil back toward war highs

I spent sometime digging into this space, and honestly, the numbers are hard to shrug off. The global ultrafast laser market sat around $2.56 billion in 2025. Multiple research firms, including SNS Insider and Fact.MR, put the 2035 target between $11.5 billion and $12.24 billion, which works out to a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of roughly 14% to 17%. Femtosecond lasers alone claim an estimated 50% to 64% of that ultrafast market by revenue, and that slice is growing at close to 16.7% a year.

These aren’t numbers pulled from a hype deck. Five concrete demand drivers are pushing this forward right now.

Why the Demand Is Real, Not Theoretical

Semiconductor makers need femtosecond lasers for through-glass vias (TGVs), the tiny interconnects used in advanced chip packaging. As AI chip designs push toward 3D stacking and heterogeneous integration, older drilling methods can’t hit the tolerances required anymore. Femtosecond lasers cut sub-micron features into glass substrates without cracking them, and for the next round of chip packaging, that precision isn’t a nice-to-have. It’s table stakes.

Electric vehicle (EV) battery production is catalyst number two. Burst-mode femtosecond cutting delivers 40% higher throughput on 6-micron electrode foils versus older methods, and the clean, zero-burr edges prevent the internal shorts that lead to thermal runaway. Manufacturers across China, South Korea, and Germany are already running these systems on their lines.

Medical devices rank third. Femtosecond lasers drill stent micro-holes for drug elution, cut catheter components with tight tolerances, and texture surfaces to improve biocompatibility. Ophthalmology, think LASIK and cataract surgery, has been a steady customer for years.

Consumer electronics is fourth. Foldable displays, OLED processing, micro-LED fabrication, and the high-density interconnects packed into modern smartphones all need the thermal-damage-free precision that only femtosecond pulses deliver.

Defense is the fifth driver, and it’s the wild card of the group. Directed-energy weapons are pulling in real budget dollars. The Department of Defense (DoD) allocated $1 billion in fiscal year 2024 for directed-energy weapon development, and that pace has only picked up through 2026.

Geographically, Asia-Pacific is growing fastest at an 18.5% CAGR, thanks to the density of wafer fabs, battery plants, and display lines packed across China, Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan. North America holds about 36% of the market and remains the hub for research and development, and for the highest-margin systems.

Who Actually Makes These Things

This field isn’t cornered by one company, which means there’s more than one way to get exposure. Four U.S.-listed stocks stand out to me, each with a different risk profile and a different angle on the growth curve.

TRUMPF, based in Germany and privately held, is the name everyone else in the industry gets measured against. It holds roughly 15% to 20% of the ultrafast market and leads in high-power industrial systems. Its TruMicro Series 5000, with burst-mode pulse delivery, improves material removal rates by 40% over single-pulse ultrafast processing. You can’t buy shares since TRUMPF is private, but its dominance says something important: this market has real industrial demand behind it, not just a story.

The Rotation Is Real. The Math Confirms It.

The numbers this week told a story the headlines missed. The Nasdaq dropped 4.6%. The S&P 500 fell 2%. The Dow gained 0.6%. That spread between the Nasdaq and the Dow. 5.2 percentage points in a single week. is the widest we’ve seen since the March selloff when the Iran conflict began. Money is leaving tech and finding a home in industrials, healthcare, and materials. Six of eleven S&P sectors finished green on Thursday. Tech was not one of them.

This is not panic selling. Advancing stocks outnumbered declining stocks most days this week. The market is rotating, not collapsing. Goldman’s John Flood put it well: “We’re in buy-the-dip mode.” The question for this week is whether the dip gets deeper before it gets bought.

What Drove the Selling

Three things broke the spring rally.

• The Warsh Shock. Fed Chair Kevin Warsh’s first FOMC meeting on June 17 delivered a message nobody expected. Nine of eighteen FOMC participants projected at least one rate hike in 2026. The median dot plot now shows the fed funds rate ending 2026 at 3.8%, up from 3.4% in March. “We’ve missed on inflation for five years and we’re going to fix that,” Warsh said. Bank of America responded by forecasting three quarter-point hikes this year, taking the rate to 4.25-4.50%. Markets are pricing a 63% chance of a September hike and 80% for December.

• The AI Cost Reckoning. $MU reported strong earnings. Revenue was excellent. The stock dropped 6.7% on Friday anyway. The broader semiconductor index (SOX) is flirting with correction territory, down nearly 10% from its highs. The catalyst was a New York Times report that OpenAI is considering delaying its IPO to next year because of $SPCX’s rocky post-debut performance and concerns about “sustainability of infrastructure spending given the delay in funding from capital markets.” When the biggest AI company in the world questions whether the capital markets will support its fundraising, the picks-and-shovels trade takes a hit. $NVDA closed at $192.53, well below its 50-day moving average of $210.09. $AMAT dropped 6.2% on Friday to $626.84.

• Oil’s Collapse. WTI crude fell to $68.86, the lowest since February 27, the day before the Iran conflict started. Brent hit $71.99. Both dropped over 10% on the week. Persian Gulf exports have recovered to 75% of pre-war levels. Saudi Arabia began loading tankers at Ras Tanura for the first time since March. The Strait of Hormuz is opening. The Iran war premium is evaporating. This is simultaneously good for inflation (lower energy prices) and bad for energy stocks. $XOM closed at $136.54, sitting below its 50-day moving average of $148.86.

The Geopolitical Picture

The Islamabad Memorandum signed June 17 between the US and Iran established a 60-day window to negotiate final peace terms. Here is where things stand right now:

The Strait of Hormuz is approximately 75% restored to pre-war shipping capacity. Saudi Arabia, UAE, Kuwait, and Qatar are all ramping supply. Iraq is pushing for a higher OPEC production quota to recoup lost revenue.

The deal is not without friction. Trump accused Iran of shooting drones at ships in the Strait on Friday. The container ship Ever Lovely was struck by a projectile southeast of Oman on Thursday. Trump confirmed traffic continued. The IRGC was reportedly angered by a joint US-Gulf statement challenging Iran’s sovereignty over the Strait.

Israel remains the wildcard. Netanyahu told Trump that Israel does not consider itself bound by the Lebanon clause in the deal. Israeli forces remain in southern Lebanon with “full freedom of action.” Violence has flared again after a brief ceasefire. Iran has made a full truce in Lebanon a condition for any final deal. This disconnect between the US-Iran framework and Israel’s posture is the biggest risk to the deal holding.

I assign the following probabilities to the Iran situation over the next 30 days:

• Base (45%): Partial implementation. Hormuz capacity stays 70-80%. Occasional disruptions from rogue IRGC elements and Lebanon spillover create volatility. Oil stabilizes $67-75 range. Inflation moderates slowly.

• Bear (25%): Lebanon violence escalates. Israel strikes Hezbollah targets, Iran retaliates with Hormuz disruptions. Deal collapses. Oil spikes back to $85+. CPI reaccelerates. September hike becomes certainty.

Expected value calculation on WTI from current $68.86:

• Bull: $62 (weight 0.30) = $18.60

• Base: $71 (weight 0.45) = $31.95

• Bear: $88 (weight 0.25) = $22.00

EV: $72.55. Oil is slightly cheap relative to the probability-weighted outcome. But the distribution is skewed. the bear tail is $19 away, the bull tail only $7 away. That asymmetry matters for position sizing.

Fed Chair Warsh Speaks Wednesday

Warsh appears in Portugal on Wednesday at 9:30 AM ET to talk about Europe. This will be his second public appearance since the June 17 FOMC. The first one moved markets hard. This one could too.

What to watch: Any comments on whether the hawkish dot plot represents his personal view (he abstained from submitting a dot), any signal on September timing, and any acknowledgment that oil prices have collapsed 10% since his meeting. If oil continues falling, the inflation picture shifts. The PCE print on Thursday came in at 4.1% year-over-year, right on consensus. That eased some pressure. But core PCE remains sticky, and Warsh has made it clear he is focused on credibility. “Hawks” don’t pivot in two weeks.

Probability Scenarios for the S&P 500 This Week

Given the convergence of the Warsh speech, NFP, holiday liquidity, and the ongoing tech rotation:

• Bull (30%): NFP comes in soft (sub-150K). Warsh signals awareness that oil’s collapse changes the inflation calculus. Market interprets this as “hike pause.” S&P rallies to 7,450-7,500. Tech bounces.

• Base (45%): NFP in line (160-185K). Warsh stays hawkish. S&P chops sideways 7,280-7,400. Rotation continues from tech into industrials and healthcare.

• Bear (25%): NFP comes in hot (200K+). Warsh doubles down. September hike gets priced to 75%+. S&P drops to 7,150-7,250. Tech leads lower. SOX enters formal correction.

EV on the S&P 500:

• Bull: 7,475 (weight 0.30) = 2,242.50

• Base: 7,340 (weight 0.45) = 3,303.00

• Bear: 7,200 (weight 0.25) = 1,800.00

EV: 7,345.50. Basically flat from Friday’s close. The probability distribution says this week is more about risk management than directional bets. The payoff is asymmetric to the downside because the bear scenario moves the index farther from current levels than the bull scenario does.

Kelly Criterion says size down here. When your EV is near zero and your variance is stretched by a holiday calendar and two major catalysts, the mathematically correct move is to reduce exposure and wait for better setups.

Hormuz Sits as the Tape’s Pressure Point

The tape reopens Monday after the Juneteenth break with $SPX printing 7,500.58, the Nasdaq at 26,517.93, and the Dow at 51,564.70. Those prints look sturdy on the surface. The session before the holiday delivered a +1.08% day on the S&P and a +1.91% pop on the Nasdaq, led by semis and reopened Hormuz optimism. Under the hood, the picture is messier than those closing tapes suggest.

This week delivers one of the most consequential 72 hour stretches of the quarter. $MU earnings hit Wednesday after bell. PCE inflation, GDP final revision, durable goods, and initial claims all stack on Thursday morning at 8:30am ET. Layered on top: an active geopolitical negotiation in Switzerland that could swing oil $5 in either direction before you finish this piece.

I am going to walk through each catalyst, assign probabilities, and build the EV math for the week.

The 12:30pm release stack delivers three high impact prints simultaneously: Durable Goods Orders MoM reversing from +7.9% to -4.7%, Personal Income MoM stepping from 0% to 0.4%, and Core PCE Price Index MoM accelerating from 0.2% to 0.3%, the defining catalyst window that dictates the entire week’s positioning calculus.

The Durable Goods print carries the 12.6-point reversal as the steepest directional swing on the slate, confirming a sharp pullback in capital goods ordering after the prior +7.9% spike. Personal Income at +0.4% confirms household income acceleration from a flat 0% baseline. Net: Thursday at 12:30pm is the week’s defining stretch. The combined Durable Goods, Personal Income, and Core PCE prints land simultaneously, each carrying high impact, and dictate the path conversation across rates, growth, and inflation. The Iran Situation: Hormuz Returns to a Binary

I spent a large portion of last week’s piece explaining why the US Iran MOU signing was constructive for oil prices moving lower, and by extension, supportive of the inflation trajectory the Fed needs to see before any rate hike talk gets shelved. Brent dropped roughly 8.5% on the week to close near $80. WTI landed around $76.51. That was a legitimate relief rip, with the first Saudi tankers transiting the Strait of Hormuz since the conflict started over three months ago.

Then Saturday happened.

Iran’s IRGC declared the Strait of Hormuz closed again, citing Israeli violations of the Lebanon ceasefire. This is the same pattern I have watched multiple times since April. A deal gets struck, a clause gets tested, and Iran uses the Strait as its primary bargaining chip. From the Iranian side, it makes complete sense. Twenty percent of globally shipped oil and natural gas moves through that waterway. When Iran wants attention, they close the faucet.

Here is what I know as of Sunday evening. JD Vance is in Burgenstock, Switzerland, in a direct face to face session with Iran’s parliamentary speaker Qalibaf and Foreign Minister Araghchi. Pakistan and Qatar are mediating. The first round covered frozen assets and oil sanctions relief. Iran’s lead negotiator stated a draft proposal is ready.

But the Iranian delegation refused to stand beside Vance for cameras. That tells you everything about how tense this remains. And while Vance was saying “great progress has been made,” Trump posted on Truth Social threatening to “hit Iran very hard again” if Hezbollah is not reined in. Two signals. Opposite directions. Same administration.

For the week ahead, I see three scenarios on Iran/Hormuz:

• Scenario A (45% probability): Talks produce enough progress that Hormuz remains functionally open. The draft proposal on frozen assets moves forward. Oil stays in the $76 to $82 range. The tape treats this as noise.

• Scenario B (35% probability): Lebanon fighting escalates, Iran closes Hormuz for 24 to 48 hours as a leverage tactic, then reopens. Oil spikes to $85 to $90 intraday. Energy names pop. The broader tape sells off 1% to 2% before recovering.

• Scenario C (20% probability): Full breakdown. Iran walks out. Hormuz closes. Trump executes on the threat. Oil pushes back above $100. Risk off across the board. This is the tail that matters.

Expected value of holding long $XLE or $XOM heading into this binary: the asymmetric payoff favors a small energy position here. If Scenario A plays out, $XOM probably drifts sideways around $137 to $140. If Scenario B or C hits, $XOM has $150 to $160 upside fast. The Kelly math on a 55% probability of scenarios B or C, with a 2 to 1 reward to risk ratio, gives me a calculated edge.

$XOM closed at $137.81, down 2.08% on the last session, sitting well below its 50 day moving average of $150.25. That gap between price and the 50 day is telling me participants have aggressively priced in peace. If peace holds, fine, I lose a little. If it does not, I have meaningful upside. I am keeping my $XOM position and may add into Monday’s open if oil gaps up on Hormuz headlines.

Earnings: The Most Important Print of the Week

$MU reports fiscal Q3 after Wednesday’s bell. This is the single most important earnings event this week, and probably the most important data point for the AI thesis since $NVDA reported last quarter.

The numbers are absurd. Analysts expect $20.05 EPS versus $1.91 a year ago. Revenue consensus is $35 billion, up 276% year over year. That is not a typo. Two hundred seventy six percent.

$MU closed at $1,133.99, up 8.70% on the last session, printing an all time high of $1,149.43 intraday. The stock has nearly quadrupled year to date. The 50 day moving average is $732.80. The stock sits 55% above its 50 day.

This is the most extended name on my watchlist by a wide margin. The HBM (High Bandwidth Memory) demand story is real. Data center spend is accelerating. The supply demand imbalance in memory chips is genuine. But 55% above the 50 day with a 276% revenue growth expectation baked in? The bar sits in the stratosphere.

Here is my scenario model for $MU post earnings:

• Beat and raise (45% probability): $MU reports above $20 EPS and guides above consensus for Q4. Stock gaps up 5% to 10% to the $1,190 to $1,245 range. Semis rally. $NVDA, $AMAT, and the broader SOX benefit.

• Beat but guide in line (30% probability): Numbers are strong but guidance does not blow the doors off. Stock sells the news. Drops 8% to 15% to the $960 to $1,040 range. This is the “buy the rumor, sell the news” outcome at these levels.

• Miss or weak guide (15% probability): Something disappoints. HBM shipments below expectations, gross margin compression, or cautious forward commentary. Stock drops 15% to 25%. The entire semi group sells off.

• Massive beat (10% probability): Blowout numbers, massive guide raise, company announces expanded capacity or new customer wins. Stock runs to $1,300+.

EV weighted move: (0.45 × +7.5%) + (0.30 × -11.5%) + (0.15 × -20%) + (0.10 × +15%) = +3.375% - 3.45% - 3.0% + 1.5% = -1.575%

The EV is slightly negative at these levels. That does not mean I am short $MU. It means I am not adding. If you are already long, this is a trim into strength setup. Trim trim trim. Take some off the table before the print and let the rest ride. You can always re enter on a pullback.

Two black swans landed on the same Friday. Now I’m pricing a four-day week with Warsh’s first FOMC inside it.

I’ve been doing this long enough to know that the tape doesn’t usually hand you the largest IPO in human history and a Middle East peace deal on the same trading day. Friday gave us both. Then Sunday morning Trump confirmed the Iran agreement and authorized lifting the US naval blockade in the Strait of Hormuz. The geopolitical premium that built up over three months of conflict just got drained out of the pricing structure in 48 hours.

Now I’m staring at a holiday-shortened week with Kevin Warsh’s first FOMC meeting Wednesday, May retail sales the same morning, and Friday closed for Juneteenth. Four trading days, two of which carry binary catalyst risk. The casino’s setup couldn’t be more interesting.

Let me walk you through what happened, what changed structurally, and how I’m probability-weighting the week.

Tuesday opens the high impact slate at 12:30pm with the housing pair: Housing Starts stepping from 1.465% to 1.44% and Building Permits compressing from 1.423% to 1.41%, both confirming a steady cooling across the residential construction vertical ahead of the FOMC print. Wednesday delivers the dominant catalyst stretch with Retail Sales MoM at 12:30pm holding the 0.5% pace, the rate decision and projections at 6:00pm, then Chair commentary at 6:30pm.

Net: Wednesday from 12:30pm through 6:30pm is the week’s defining stretch. The Retail Sales print opens the day, the rate hold at 3.75% and the dot plot dictate the policy path, and the Chair press conference closes the catalyst slate. No additional high impact prints land Thursday or Friday.

Last Week’s Tape: From Selloff to Rip in Five Days

The week prior closed with the worst Nasdaq day since April 2025. $SPX bled 2.64% on Friday June 5 to 7,383.74. $NDX dropped 4.18% to 25,709.43. The chip carnage was the story; $NVDA, $MU, $AMAT all got hit on a Broadcom guidance disappointment that bled into the broader semiconductor complex.

Then last week happened.

The small caps led with +3.9%. That’s the tell. Risk-on rotation when geopolitical premium gets priced out. $VIX collapsed from 21.51 to 17.68, dropping below the implied move buffer the options market had built into the week. The cash that was hiding in consumer staples last week rotated back into beta.

Three things drove the reversal:

1. CPI came in soft on the core print Wednesday. Headline +4.2% YoY (highest since April 2023) but core was +0.2% MoM versus +0.3% expected, with core YoY at 2.9% in line. The market read this as energy-driven inflation, not broad-based. That’s a sigma-miss to the dovish side on the only number the Fed actually cares about right now.

2. SpaceX IPO Friday absorbed $75 billion of capital and still ripped 19% on its debut. I’ll get to the math in a minute, but the fact that the largest IPO in history could clear at $135 and immediately rally to $160.95 told you everything about liquidity conditions.

3. Iran headlines accelerated through the week. By Friday afternoon Brent was below $86, down from $93+ the prior Friday. Trump signaled a deal was imminent. WTI closed at $84.88, down 3.23% on the day alone.

The cherry on top dropped Sunday. Pakistan’s PM confirmed the signing in Switzerland. Trump authorized lifting the naval blockade. The toll-free reopening of Hormuz is now in motion.

The Iran Deal: What Actually Changed

Let me get specific about what this deal does and doesn’t do, because the price action is going to depend on how the second-order effects play out.

What’s in the framework:

• 60-day ceasefire extension during which the Strait of Hormuz reopens toll-free

• Iran clears the mines it deployed in the waterway

• US lifts the naval blockade of Iranian ports

• Iran can sell oil freely again (sanctions partially suspended)

• Nuclear negotiations continue but are not the gating item for the truce

• Frozen Iranian funds get released under the framework

• Final signing was set for Friday in Switzerland

What’s NOT settled:

• Permanent peace

• Iran’s enriched uranium disposition (Trump wanted it turned over to the US)

• The “service fees” Iran may charge for Hormuz transit after the 60-day window

• Whether sanctions get lifted permanently or this is structured as a renewable framework

For the tape, here’s what matters. The EIA was modeling Brent at $105 for June and July under their base case of Hormuz staying closed through Q3. Brent closed Friday near $86. That’s a $19 delta from official government forecasts, and it took less than two weeks to fully materialize.

Now run the math on what that does to inflation. The May CPI energy print was +3.9% MoM, +23.5% YoY. Gasoline +7.0%. If Brent stays below $90 through June and July, energy reverses hard. Morningstar’s economist already pointed out that gas was off $0.30/gallon from May peaks before the deal even closed.

A $20/barrel haircut on oil flowing through to retail gas at roughly $0.50/gallon translates to roughly 0.3-0.5 percentage points off headline CPI within 60-90 days. That doesn’t fix the core problem (sticky services inflation at 3.4% shelter, 4.1% transport services), but it does take the worst tail off the inflation picture.

So the Iran deal is bullish for stocks, bearish for oil, bearish for gold, neutral-to-bullish for bonds. The tricky read is whether Warsh sees the energy unwind as a reason to soften the hawkish stance, or whether he stays focused on sticky core services and signals additional hikes.

I lean toward the latter. Warsh is hawkish by reputation and the entire reason markets priced him in as such after his nomination was his post-2008 critique of balance sheet expansion. He’s not going to deliver a dovish surprise three weeks into the job.

SpaceX IPO: The $75 Billion Print and What Comes Next

Friday’s $SPCX debut deserves its own section because the numbers are so unusual they distort every cross-asset read of the tape.

The print:

• Priced at $135, opened at $150, closed at $160.95

• 555.6 million shares sold, $75 billion raised

• Day-one valuation: $2.1 trillion

• Musk now owns 82%+ voting control

• xAI integrated post-merger, $1.25T combined valuation now blown out to $2.1T

• Starlink at $15.5B revenue run-rate, $4.4B operating profit, 9.2M subscribers across 120 countries

The previous record holder was Saudi Aramco’s 2019 IPO at $25.6 billion. SpaceX cleared roughly 3x that in a single Friday session. Gavekal Research’s data point on this was telling: S&P 500 companies issued $1.7 trillion in equity over the 12 months to September 2025, roughly $140 billion per month in net new supply. SpaceX absorbed two weeks of typical issuance flow in one print and the market still ripped.

That tells me liquidity conditions are way better than the inflation prints suggest. Real money is still chasing.

The forward-looking question on $SPCX is harder. Here’s the math problem you have to solve:

At $160.95 and a $2.1T market cap, you’re paying roughly 135x trailing Starlink revenue. If Starlink hits its 2027 target of $25-30B revenue (Morgan Stanley’s projection), you’re paying 70-84x on forward 2027 sales. The rocket business doesn’t generate meaningful margin yet (Falcon 9 launches are roughly break-even, Starship is still pre-revenue). xAI burned an estimated $4 billion in 2025 against minimal external revenue.

For comparison, $NVDA trades at about 25x forward revenue and that’s considered rich. SpaceX at 70-80x forward Starlink revenue alone is a different category of multiple.

The probability-weighted scenarios I’d put on $SPCX over the next 30 days:

• Bear (gap fill), 30% probability, $135-$145: IPO froth fades, lockup-driven volatility, growth/multiple compression.

• Base (chop), 45% probability, $150-$175: Holds gains, ranges as fundamentals get priced in.

• Bull (continuation), 25% probability, $185-$220: Index inclusion speculation, Starlink subscriber acceleration, retail FOMO.

I’m not interested in a position here. The IV is going to be feral for the first few weeks. Selling premium is tempting but the directional uncertainty plus the lockup overhang plus the post-IPO momentum factor all stack against you. Better setups will print once the dust settles.

What does matter for the broader tape: SpaceX is now larger than every Mag 7 name except $NVDA, $MSFT, and $AAPL. Index inclusion in the Nasdaq-100 will be mechanical (eligibility met immediately under modified market-cap rules). When that happens, every passive QQQ flow buys $SPCX at the index weight. That’s a structural bid that doesn’t exist for any other recent IPO. Watch the date of inclusion as a discrete catalyst.

The CPI/PPI Reality Check on Rates

The inflation data flipped the script on what the Fed can plausibly do this week.

May CPI:

• Headline: +4.2% YoY (highest since April 2023)

• Core: +2.9% YoY (highest since September 2025)

• MoM headline: +0.5%

• MoM core: +0.2% (below +0.3% consensus)

• Energy: +3.9% MoM, +23.5% YoY

• Shelter: +3.4% YoY

• Transport services: +4.1% YoY

May PPI:

• Headline: +6.5% YoY (highest since November 2022)

• Reading came in above consensus of +6.4%

April Core PCE (most recent print):

• +3.0% YoY, +0.4% MoM (10-month high streak)

You read those numbers and your first reaction should be “no Fed in their right mind is cutting into that.” And the market agrees. CME FedWatch had a 0.6% implied probability of a hike at this week’s meeting as of last Friday. Hold is essentially priced as a foregone conclusion. What’s NOT priced is the rate path for the back half of 2026.

J.P. Morgan now expects no cuts in 2026 and a 25bp hike in Q3 2027 if inflation doesn’t cooperate. CME FedWatch is showing roughly 70% probability of at least one hike by year-end 2026, up from near zero in January.

The pricing has shifted. The question for Warsh’s first meeting is whether he validates the hawkish repricing through the dot plot, or whether he tries to thread a needle that keeps optionality open.

Week Ahead: Four Days, Two Catalysts

The Wednesday block is the one to circle. May Retail Sales drops at 8:30am ET, roughly 5.5 hours before Warsh takes the podium. If retail prints hot, that’s another data point arguing against cuts. If it prints soft, the bull case for a more neutral Warsh strengthens. Friday is dark for Juneteenth, so don’t get caught with open positions Thursday night assuming Friday liquidity will be there.

The setup matters because Wednesday afternoon will likely move the tape more than the rest of the week combined, and you’ve got no Friday session to reverse a bad print before the weekend.

Earnings on the docket: $KMX (CarMax) Wednesday morning (consumer discretionary read), $LZB (La-Z-Boy) Wednesday, $KR (Kroger) Friday morning but they’ll report into a closed tape so the move waits for Monday.

Friday rearranged the board. The Nasdaq Composite fell 4.18% to 25,709, its worst single session since the tariff panic of April 2025. The S&P 500 dropped 2.64% to 7,383. The Dow gave back 695 points to 50,867. The Russell 2000 fell 3.47%. The VIX jumped almost 40% in a day to 21.51. When small caps, large caps, and volatility all move that hard in the same direction, the tape is usually telling you something changed in how the market prices risk, not just in one corner of it.

Except this time it mostly was one corner.

What actually broke

The damage concentrated in semiconductors. $MU fell 13.25% to 864. $AMAT dropped 9.71% to 453. The $SMH semiconductor ETF lost 9.22%. $NVDA fell 6.20% to 205. $CRWD, the highest-beta liquid name in software, fell 6.68%.

The trigger was not a macro shock. It started Wednesday night when Broadcom reported and left its full-year AI chip target unchanged. In a group priced for acceleration, “unchanged” reads as a downgrade. Thursday the chips sold. Friday the selling found a second gear, helped along by Meta floating billions in new stock days after Alphabet raised $80 billion, both to fund AI buildouts. Investors looked at all that fresh equity hitting an already crowded trade and did the arithmetic.

So the first read is mechanical. This was a positioning unwind in the most owned, most crowded part of the market, not the opening of a recession trade. That distinction is the whole game for how you size anything next week.

The macro the market is now pricing

Here is the part that can turn a sector unwind into something larger. May payrolls printed +172,000 against expectations near 85,000, with unemployment steady at 4.3% and wages up 0.3%. A hot jobs number is normally good news. Right now it is fuel for the rate story.

Kevin Warsh runs the Fed now. Powell’s term ended in May. Warsh spent his confirmation hearing blaming the 2021 and 2022 Fed for waiting too long to raise rates. He arrived with a White House mandate to cut, and inflation has taken that option off the table. The funds rate sits at 3.50 to 3.75%. Markets are no longer debating cuts. They are pricing roughly a 60% chance of at least one hike before year end, and they have almost fully priced a quarter-point hike by December. The 10 year closed Friday at 4.54%, up 6 basis points. The 2 year jumped 10 basis points to 4.16%. The 20 and 30 year both sit above 5%.

That is the stagflation-lite setup I have been writing about for weeks. Sticky inflation, a labor market that refuses to crack, and a Fed chair whose instinct is to tighten into it.

Wednesday is the whole week

Everything routes through one print. May CPI lands Wednesday June 10 at 8:30 a.m. Eastern. PPI follows the next morning. This is the last major inflation read before the FOMC meets June 16 and 17, so it does double duty. It moves the market on the day, and it sets the tone for the Fed a week later.

The bar is set by April, which ran hot. Headline CPI was +0.6% on the month and +3.8% over the year. Core was +0.4% monthly and +2.8% annual, the firmest in close to three years. April PCE was tracking near 3.9%.

Read the reaction function before the number. With a hike already most of the way priced, a hot CPI confirms the path and pushes yields higher, which pressures the same long-duration tech that just got hit. A cool CPI does the opposite and hands the oversold chip trade a reason to bounce. The asymmetry in the bond market right now leans toward yields having more room to rise on a bad print than to fall on a good one, because the cutting scenario is already gone.

The oil overhang nobody resolved

I want to be precise here, because the headlines keep getting this wrong. The Iran situation is not over. A conditional ceasefire has been in place since early April, but it keeps getting extended rather than signed, and the Strait of Hormuz is still effectively closed. Traffic through the strait is running near 5% of normal. The US has a counter-blockade on Iranian ports. As recently as Friday, US forces shot down Iranian missiles and drones headed toward Gulf allies. There is no finished deal. The much-discussed toll-free reopening clause is not in any signed text.

Brent settled near $93 Friday, WTI near $90, both down about 2% on the day on weak Chinese demand and stalled talks. Do not confuse a soft Friday with a solved problem. About a fifth of seaborne oil normally moves through that strait. As long as it stays choked, every CPI print carries an energy tail that feeds straight back into the rate story. Oil lower on the week is a sentiment read, not an all clear.

Markets closed Friday at record highs, and almost everyone is telling the wrong story about why.

The $SPX logged its ninth straight weekly gain, the longest winning streak since 2023, and the Dow notched its first record close above 51,000. Only the $RUT lagged, finishing red. On the surface this looks like a clean risk-on tape running on AI earnings and an Iran ceasefire.

Run the arithmetic. Inflation is climbing toward 4% while growth is sliding toward 1.5%. That is the combination that hands a central bank no good options, and the new Fed Chair, Kevin Warsh, walked straight into it.

This is why the market narrative annoys me right now. I keep reading about “rate-cut hopes.” There are no rate-cut hopes if you look at where money is actually positioned. With the next FOMC decision landing June 17 to 18, traders are now assigning real probability to a hike before year-end, not a cut. The 30-year is matching its 2023 peak, and yields repriced higher all month because the bond market read the same PCE print I just showed you.

So the question for the week is simple. Equities are priced for a soft landing and a friendly Fed. The data is describing sticky inflation and a Fed that may have to tighten into slowing growth. One of those two readings is wrong, and this week’s jobs data starts settling the argument.

Iran: the deal is not done, and the oil math is misunderstood

The second piece of bad reporting I want to clear up is the Iran “de-escalation.”

Here is the actual state of play. The ceasefire is about seven weeks old. Over that stretch the U.S. and Iran have traded strikes and accusations of violations without returning to full war. On Thursday the White House announced a tentative memorandum to extend the ceasefire 60 days and reopen the Strait of Hormuz. On Friday, Trump went into the Situation Room to make what he called a “final determination” on it. Two hours later the meeting ended with no decision. Sticking points include the unfreezing of Iranian funds, enriched uranium, and whether Hormuz reopens with no tolls. Iran’s own Fars agency said the deal is still in ratification and has not been decided.

So nothing is signed. The Strait of Hormuz threat level is still rated critical by maritime authorities, and that waterway has been effectively paralyzed for three months. That paralysis is the reason oil spiked in the first place and the reason inflation is running at 3.8%.

Now look at the actual oil tape instead of the headline. People are calling recent oil weakness a “tailwind.” It is not a tailwind. It is a partial give-back off a much higher spike, and $USO still trades far above its 200-day average. Oil is elevated, not cheap.

Earnings: Wednesday is the whole ballgame

Tech is not done reporting. The week is light on names but heavy on weight.

Tuesday brings $PANW (Palo Alto, fiscal Q3), $DG, $ULTA, $GitLab, and $VSCO for a consumer read.

Wednesday after the close is the one that matters: $AVGO and $CRWD on the same afternoon, alongside $FIVE, $MDT, $VEEV, and $CIEN.

$AVGO reports fiscal Q2 with consensus near $22.1 billion in revenue, up roughly 39% year over year, on adjusted EPS around $2.40. The stock closed near $447, a hair under its all-time high of $448.90, with a Strong Buy consensus and a UBS target of $490. When a stock is priced for perfection going into the print, the EV on chasing it long into earnings is poor. The asymmetry favors a beat that gets sold or a miss that gets crushed. I would rather react to the AI accelerator guidance than guess at it.

Here is the other one. Michigan’s Consumer Sentiment Index printed 44.8 for May. Record low. Third consecutive monthly decline. Year-ahead inflation expectations sit at 4.8%. Long-run expectations climbed to 3.9%. 57% of consumers spontaneously cite high prices eroding their purchasing power.

Equities at all-time highs. Consumers at all-time lows. Both cannot be right. One is mispriced. This week’s data flow starts telling us which.

Nineteen months ago, September 30, 2024, I locked in a snapshot of every name in the book. Fifty-four positions, each weighted with conviction. Holding every position untouched would have returned +95.81% on a static-weighted basis. Strong, but not the whole picture.

I did not sit still. Between November 2024 and January 2026 I executed ten position changes, cutting losers fast and recycling that capital into the strongest names plus a real-assets sleeve. The book has compounded well past the static baseline.

Headline returns

The dashboard reads +22.57% in April alone, +24.87% YTD, +70.49% trailing 1-year, +97.50% over five years portfolio-weighted, and +17.24% annualized over the full 9.7-year track record.

April 2026 alone added more than the entire 2024 calendar year. That month was the AI capex print plus a parabolic move in silver, both of which the book was positioned for ahead of the move.

The portfolio has compounded at roughly 2x the SP500 over the trailing year. The spread widened materially after April 2026 as broad index gains lagged the AI infrastructure and real-assets concentration carried in this book.

The Tape

The week ended with a thud. Equities sold off hard into the close on Friday as surging oil prices rattled the bond tape and drove yields to multi-year highs. The S&P 500 dropped 92.74 points (1.24%) to 7,408.50, falling from its all-time high set just a day earlier. The Dow shed 537.29 points (1.07%) to 49,526.17. The Nasdaq took the worst hit at 1.54%, closing at 26,225.15, with AI and mega-cap tech names leading the decline. Small caps got crushed; the Russell 2000 fell 2.44% to 2,793.30.

But zoom out. For the week, the S&P and Nasdaq each squeezed out roughly +0.3%, while the Dow finished essentially flat at -0.05%. So Friday’s selloff largely erased what had been a quiet grind higher off record levels. YTD, the S&P sits around +8%, still comfortably in the green.

The VIX jumped 6.78% to 18.43. Not panic territory, but the move signals the tape is waking up from a prolonged calm. Two weeks ago VIX was comfortably sub-16. Now it's pressing toward the 20 level, and with $NVDA earnings plus FOMC minutes landing mid-week, that number could rip higher.

Summary

Tuesday owns the week. Six inflation prints hitting at 12:30pm deliver the most concentrated CPI data dump on the calendar, with CPI YoY accelerating from 3.3% to 3.7% as the single most consequential number on the slate. The 40-basis-point expansion in headline annual inflation rewrites the rate-path calculus.

Monday opens quietly with Existing Home Sales expected to tick from 3.98% to 4.05%, a marginal housing firming that sets the baseline.

Tuesday delivers the inflation cluster. CPI YoY at 3.7% versus 3.3% prior is the headline shock potential. Core CPI YoY holds flat at 2.6%, but Core MoM doubles from 0.2% to 0.4%, and Inflation Rate MoM compresses from 0.9% to 0.6%. The mix of annual acceleration and monthly deceleration sets up a crosscurrent signal.

The setup

Fusion has burned through promises for sixty years. What changed in February 2025 was the peer-reviewed publication of Stellaris in Fusion Engineering and Design. Stellaris is the first fully integrated commercial stellarator concept that survives electromagnetic, structural, thermal, and neutronics simulations in a single coherent design. That coherence step is what private capital had been waiting for.

Proxima Fusion GmbH spun out of the Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics (IPP) in 2023, based in Munich. By mid 2026 the team runs about 100 people pulled from IPP, MIT, SpaceX, and Tesla, with over 200 million euros of private and public capital behind them.

A stellarator differs from a tokamak in one stubborn way. Tokamaks like ITER or $CFS SPARC push a plasma current through the fuel, which can disrupt and slam the vessel walls. Stellarators twist the confining fields with external coils, so no plasma current means no disruption to absorb. The old tradeoff was brutal coil geometry. Proxima solved enough of that with quasi isodynamic (QI) optimization, building on W7-X heritage from IPP, to push fields above 20 T into a compact module.

The other half of the design sits on high-temperature superconducting tape, REBCO. Power density scales roughly with B to the fourth, so doubling the field shrinks reactor size by a factor of sixteen. That single equation flipped fusion from a 2070 promise into a 2030s capex item.

What Stellaris actually is

The headline engineering points I track:

• HTS magnets at the 20 T class. Smaller reactor, higher power density.

• Island divertor. Heat exhaust strategy already proven on W7-AS and W7-X.

• StarFinder optimization framework. Computational design that found the QI geometry survivable across every coupled physics constraint.

• Liquid metal breeding blanket. Proxima patent that solves tritium self sufficiency inside the awkward stellarator geometry.

• Modular coil assembly. Each coil can be built and tested in a factory before installation at the plant site.

No single piece of this is new. The integration is. Until February 2025 no peer-reviewed paper had shown a stellarator design that survives all of these constraints at once. Now there is one.

The roadmap I am pricing

Four hard dates anchor the timeline.

1. February 2025. Stellaris concept published. Done.

2. 2027. Stellarator Model Coil (SMC) completion. A full scale prototype magnet storing over 100 MJ of energy. The single biggest de-risking event before 2030.

3. 2031. Alpha demonstration stellarator achieves Q greater than 1 in Garching, near IPP. Net energy gain. Budget around 2 billion euros.

4. Late 2030s. Stellaris commercial plant at the former Gundremmingen nuclear site in Bavaria, hosted by $RWE on Xetra.

These numbers move with every milestone print. SMC is the catalyst that re-weights everything else.

The capital story has two chapters.

Chapter one, the private round. June 2025, Proxima closed a 130 million euro Series A, the largest private fusion raise in Europe to that point. Cherry Ventures and Balderton Capital co-led. UVC Partners, DeepTech and Climate Fonds (DTCF), Plural, Leitmotif, Lightspeed, Bayern Kapital, HTGF, Club degli Investitori, OMNES Capital, Elaia Partners, Visionaries Tomorrow, Wilbe, and redalpine filled the rest. A 15 million euro extension closed September 2025. Post extension valuation runs around 650 million euros. Total funding above 200 million euros.

Chapter two, the state and utility deal. February 26, 2026, Proxima signed an MoU with the Free State of Bavaria, $RWE on Xetra, and Max Planck IPP to build Stellaris at the former Gundremmingen nuclear power plant site. The funding split for the Alpha demonstrator now reads:

• 20 percent private equity from Proxima.

• 20 percent state contribution from Bavaria, via the High Tech Agenda (up to 400 million euros committed).

• Remaining 60 percent expected from German federal allocation (around 1.2 billion euros) plus operating partner contributions.

That MoU closed the credibility gap. Pre-2026 Proxima looked like a fast growing science startup. After the MoU it looks like a sovereign capability play backed by a regional government that needs baseload power before its renewables targets bite.

The Buffett Indicator Just Hit a Number No One Has Ever Seen

I pulled the data myself. As of 05/09/2026, GuruFocus puts the ratio of total US equities cap to Gross Domestic Product (GDP) at 229.9 percent. That is the highest reading ever recorded. Not close to the highest. The actual highest.

This metric, the one Buffett himself called “probably the best single measure of where valuations stand at any given moment,” has never been here before. We are in uncharted territory. And while this ratio alone won’t tell you when to sell or what to buy, the long-term math it produces deserves your full attention.

Three Historical Analogs and What Happened Next

Zero precedent exists for 229 percent. The closest comparisons still sit well below where we are right now.

1. March 2000: The Dot-Com Peak

The indicator reached roughly 160 percent. The $SPY dropped 12 percent over the following 12 months. It kept falling. Peak-to-trough drawdown hit 49 percent over 2.5 years. Full recovery took about seven years. The Shiller Cyclically Adjusted Price to Earnings (CAPE) ratio peaked at 44.19 that December, the all-time record.

2. November 2021: The Post-Stimulus Peak

The indicator hit roughly 200 percent. The $SPY sank 19.4 percent the following calendar year. It bottomed in October 2022, then reflated hard on the early artificial intelligence (AI) narrative.

3. Early-to-Mid 2025: The Pre-AI Capex Acceleration

The indicator climbed to around 217 percent. The $SPY gained 12 to 15 percent over the next 12 months. The ratio completely failed as a timing signal here. Equities kept ripping on Magnificent Seven earnings and massive AI capital expenditure.

The pattern across these episodes is consistent for long-term expected returns but terrible for short-term timing. Every prior extreme delivered poor decade-forward performance. Yet equities stayed “overvalued” for years at a stretch, punishing anyone who exited prematurely.

The CAPE Ratio Confirms the Signal

The Shiller CAPE sits at 42.05 as of 05/08/2026, per Multpl. GuruFocus has it at 40.9. Either number puts it within striking distance of the all-time record of 44.19 set in December 1999.

The only other time in 155 years of data that the CAPE exceeded 40 was the peak of the dot-com bubble. Right now, we are flirting with that same threshold for the second time since 1871.

GuruFocus calculates an implied future annual return of just 1.3 percent based on the current CAPE. Robert Shiller’s own model forecasts similar numbers. He sees European equities (CAPE of 22.3) returning 7.8 percent annualized over the next decade and Japanese equities returning 6.2 percent. US equities? The model projects low single digits at best.

The Forward PE Tells a Slightly Different Story

Here’s where the bull case gets interesting. The forward 12-month price-to-earnings (PE) ratio stands at 21.0x as of 05/08/2026 per FactSet. That sits above the five-year average of 19.9x and the 10-year average of 18.9x. Expensive, yes. But not obscene by recent standards.

Reuters ran a headline in April noting the $SPY looked “cheap” at 20.8x forward earnings. That framing only works if you believe current earnings projections hold up.

And here’s the thing: right now, those projections look strong. The $SPY is reporting first quarter year-over-year earnings growth of 27.7 percent, the strongest since Q4 2021. About 88 percent of companies are beating estimates, above the five-year average of 78 percent. FactSet projects full-year 2026 earnings growth of 21 percent. Reuters puts it at 22.6 percent. Morgan Stanley’s Mike Wilson expects 17 percent.

Goldman Sachs projects a 12 percent total return for 2026, with earnings per share (EPS) growth of 12 percent this year and 10 percent in 2027.

So earnings are genuinely strong. The question is sustainability.

Corporate Profits as a Percentage of GDP: The Elephant in the Room

Pretax corporate profits just set a record as a share of GDP, hitting their highest level since record-keeping began in 1947. Net profit margins reached a record 14.7 percent. Corporate profits now represent roughly 12 percent of GDP versus a historical average of 7 to 8 percent.

The bulls point to this profit surge as justification for elevated valuations. The argument goes: if companies earn more per dollar of economic output, they deserve higher multiples.

The problem? A Federal Reserve paper from 2023 laid it out plainly. Two of the biggest tailwinds behind this profit expansion, falling interest rates and falling corporate tax rates, have largely run their course. The effective corporate tax rate for $SPY nonfinancials dropped from 34 percent in 1989 to 15 percent in 2019. With the US debt-to-GDP ratio near all-time highs, another deficit-funded tax cut looks unlikely. And rates have risen substantially since 2022.

Profits at 12 percent of GDP assume the current environment persists indefinitely. History says it won’t. Mean reversion in profit margins is one of the most reliable forces in economics.

The Equity Risk Premium Is Vanishing

This is the number that should keep you up at night.

The equity risk premium (ERP), the extra return equities offer over risk-free bonds, is approaching zero. The $SPY forward earnings yield sits around 4.1 percent. The 10-year Treasury yields 4.39 percent. That means bonds are offering a higher yield than equities right now.

Michael Darda at Roth Capital notes the ERP is on the cusp of turning negative for the first time since late 2024. Gina Martin Adams at HB Wealth calls it a potential “trip wire” for equities, warning that if the ERP crosses into negative territory, stress could follow.

Aswath Damodaran at NYU Stern calculated an implied ERP of 4.23 percent as of 01/01/2026, based on expected cash flows and an $SPY level of 5845.5. Since then, the index has ripped higher while Treasury yields have barely moved. That ERP has compressed significantly.

Morgan Stanley flags that risk premiums “remain minimal and valuations elevated, suggesting a degree of complacency.” Schwab’s 2026 long-term capital expectations show fixed income continuing to benefit from elevated rates while equities face a “narrowing edge over risk-free alternatives.”

For the first time since the dot-com era, the 10-year Treasury yield has outpaced the $SPY earnings yield. Hartford Funds notes this reversal highlights “fixed income’s renewed appeal.”

Concentration Risk: A Structural Vulnerability

The top 10 stocks in the $SPY represent 35.59 percent of the index, per AhaSignals. That is down from 41 percent in 2025, but still sits at extreme historical levels. The AI Concentration Risk Index (ACRI) scores 81 out of 100, rated CRITICAL.

The top 10 stocks contributed 5.1 percentage points to the index return this year. The top 20 contributed 6.5 percentage points. That exceeds the index’s 5.7 percent total return because plenty of other names are dragging it down.

But something interesting is happening. The equal-weight $SPY has been crushing the cap-weight version in 2026. Nationwide notes the Equal Weight Index hit 13 record highs already this year and is off to its strongest relative start since 1992. Breadth is broadening. Cyclical sectors turned higher last fall, supported by looser monetary policy and business-friendly fiscal measures.

This rotation matters. If the AI narrative cracks, concentration becomes a vicious headwind. If breadth continues expanding, the average stock may do better than the index suggests.

Berkshire Hathaway: The Loudest Non-Verbal Signal in Equities

Berkshire’s cash pile hit 397.4 billion dollars at the end of Q1 2026. That is larger than the entire cap of companies like . Nearly 8x the size of .

Greg Abel’s first quarter as CEO produced 11.35 billion dollars in operating earnings, up 18 percent year-over-year. Insurance underwriting profit surged 23.5 percent. BNSF railroad earnings grew 13.4 percent. Net income more than doubled to 10.1 billion dollars.

But the real story is what Berkshire is NOT doing.

Buffett was a net seller of equities for 13 consecutive quarters before retiring. He slashed the $AAPL position by more than 75 percent from its peak. The stake dropped from over half the portfolio to about 19 percent. He trimmed $AAPL again in Q4 2025 by 4.3 percent to 61.96 billion dollars, even while starting a new position in $GOOG.

Share buybacks? Trivial. Just 234 million dollars in Q1 despite announcing buybacks had “resumed.” At a 397 billion dollar cash pile, that is a rounding error.

Abel himself sent a message on AI spending. He is not chasing the AI narrative. Berkshire builds technology in-house, emphasizing “capital discipline” and long-term business benefit over hype-driven capex.

The combination of record cash, persistent equity sales, minimal buybacks, and AI skepticism from the world’s most successful capital allocator says everything you need to hear without a single word.

7.75 Trillion Dollars in Money Funds

Total assets in money funds jumped to 7.75 trillion dollars for the week ended 05/06/2026 per the Investment Company Institute (ICI). During the Iran conflict in March, assets briefly surged past 8 trillion. This represents roughly 15 percent of $SPY cap.

Some bulls see this as “dry powder waiting to flood into equities.” Wolf Street and the Wall Street Journal have both called that framing a myth. Cash in money funds is not sideline money waiting to deploy. It is a deliberate allocation choice. People holding 4+ percent yields in risk-free instruments are not sitting on the edge of their seats waiting to pile into equities yielding less.

The Structural Criticism: Why Some Say the Indicator Is Broken

Fair point to acknowledge. Today’s US-listed companies generate revenue globally. , , , , and earn well beyond the American economy. A simple cap-versus-GDP comparison becomes less meaningful when compared to the early 2000s.

One analyst adjusted the cap figure by stripping out foreign-derived revenue. The adjusted ratio drops to roughly 115 to 130 percent. Not cheap, but not apocalyptic.

Yahoo Finance UK noted that “anyone who’s been using it as gospel has so far potentially missed out on some terrific gains.” That’s correct. The indicator has been above its long-term trend for years. Structural shifts in the composition of US-listed companies partially explain the elevation.

But partially is doing a lot of heavy lifting in that sentence. Even the adjusted ratio sits well above historical norms. And the CAPE, the forward PE, the ERP, and the profit-to-GDP ratio all tell the same story from different angles. When every valuation metric simultaneously screams expensive, dismissing them all requires a level of optimism that the math does not support.

The GuruFocus Projection: Negative 0.9 Percent Per Year for a Decade

GuruFocus runs a valuation model based on historical month-end data from the Buffett Indicator. At 229.9 percent, the model now projects negative 0.9 percent annualized returns for the next decade, including dividends.

The Shiller CAPE model projects about 1.3 percent.

Damodaran’s implied equity return model started 2026 at 8.41 percent, but that was calculated at a $SPY level of 5845. The index now sits near 7365. That return expectation has compressed substantially.

Schwab’s long-term capital expectations show the gap between expected equity and fixed income returns narrowing to near zero.

Multiple independent models using different methodologies point to the same conclusion: expected returns from US equities over the next decade are historically poor.

What Berkshire’s Posture Actually Looks Like in Practice

Own less beta. The broad index carries concentrated, expensive, high-beta risk right now.

Hold more cash. At 4+ percent yields with zero duration risk, cash is not a dead allocation. It is a paid option on future opportunity.

Hunt for idiosyncratic alpha. Individual names with genuine earnings growth at reasonable valuations still exist. The equal-weight outperformance suggests the average stock is healthier than the index implies.

Add uncorrelated assets. International equities (CAPE of 22 in Europe), commodities, real assets, and fixed income all offer better risk-adjusted profiles at current US valuations.

Bottom Line (NFA)

This is not a “sell everything” signal. It never is with valuation metrics alone. Equities can remain irrational for years. Anyone who sold at 200 percent watched the ratio climb another 30 points.

But the long-term math from 229.9 percent has been ugly in every prior extreme. The CAPE confirms it. The ERP confirms it. The profit-to-GDP ratio suggests the earnings tailwind is weakening. Berkshire’s behavior confirms it louder than any words.

The expected value of broad US equity exposure over the next decade, probability-weighted across all scenarios, sits near zero real return. Cash yields 4+ percent with no duration risk. That asymmetry is the signal.

The math says yes. The data says now.
